LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
GARDEN AT RETHYMNO
The house is located at the mountainous village of Spili, SW of the city of Rethymno. In comparison to the arid landscape of Crete, the area is surrounded by a lush vegetation of fruit trees and many springs. The garden is in a sloping area, with spectacular panoramic views to the plains of the region.
The garden design tried initially to solve the relief and irrigation problems, by creating terraced areas with dry stone walls allowing the installation of chasmophytic vegetation, or by building rock gardens. The main concept was based on the idea of
privacy from the road, taking also into consideration the micro-climatic conditions.
The first level of the garden was designed in such a way allowing a partial view from the house towards the road and the nearby fields. The existing trees were maintained and the new ones were placed in positions that do not impede the view of the valley. Particular attention was given to the creation of the natural rock garden, connecting the front part of the garden with the second level.
On the second level and around the house, a major seating area was created around the pool. At the back of the garden, another sheltered sitting area was created. Nearby the kitchen, a vegetable garden in rectangular plots was designed. In the third level, the slopes were stabilized by dry stone walls and low creeping planting. Finally, most of the area was planted with fruit trees (walnut, almond, etc.)
The garden design initially included preliminary drawings in the form of sketches, for the better understanding of the proposal by the customer. The final landscape design included master plans, planting, irrigation and drainage details.
