LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

HEROES SQUARE OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF ELEFSIS

The landscape design of Heroes square was assigned by the Municipality of Elefsis.
The main goal of the project was to create a beautiful space, in harmony with the surroundings and in relation to the archaeological site of Elefisis.

The main idea of planting design was based on the image of the field, as pictured in the Greek mythology about the sanctuary of Elefsis.  The design of the new planting as well as the management of the existing vegetation ensured the distinct structure, the readability and proper function of the various spaces. The planting and harvesting would be part of a learning process for the schools of the area.

Taking into consideration the symbolism of the place and especially the alternation of life and death of nature over time, the selection of planting species was based on this idea and the attempt of the design was to attribute this landscape image as closely as possible. The planting layout ensured a total coverage of the area, a rotation of shapes and colors, and a seasonal succession of species.

Most of the existing trees were retained and linear planting of grasses and herbaceous herbs dominated the square. A circular space with ears was the main design element. The seasonal change of the landscape of the square was related to the symbolic dimension of the location and the myth of Demeter. Demeter caused drought and famine during the stay of her daughter Persephone in the Underworld and euphoria during the months of Persephone's return to the upper world.
